Hands-on training for heavy vehicle operation

Vocational Vehicle Operator Program

This program bridges the gap between CDL basics and real-world driving challenges faced by vocational fleet operators. Designed for new drivers, emergency responders, and municipal equipment operators.

Introduction to Commercial & Emergency Vehicle Operation

Establishes the operator’s legal and safety responsibilities when driving large vocational vehicles, including fire apparatus, sanitation trucks, utility vehicles, and heavy-duty service rigs. Covers classification, risk profiles, and the implications of operating under a DOT-regulated fleet.

Vehicle Dynamics & Braking (Air Brake Emphasis)

Explores how weight, speed, terrain, and air brake mechanics impact stopping distance and control. Operators learn about service brakes vs. emergency brakes, retarder use (e.g., Jake brakes), and how to adjust driving behavior based on road conditions and vehicle load.

OEM Maintenance & Operator Checklists

Focuses on aligning operator practices with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) maintenance standards. Drivers learn how to identify faults, complete inspection logs, and understand service intervals to prevent downtime and reduce liability for overlooked mechanical issues.

Urban & Grade Driving Tactics

Trains drivers on maneuvering large vehicles in congested, hilly, or limited-clearance environments. Includes use of mirrors, defensive driving positioning, clearance awareness, managing steep grades, and techniques for low-speed control in tight areas.

Parking, Backing & Maneuvering Protocols

Covers practical techniques for docking, parallel parking, alley backing, and off-street vehicle staging. Emphasizes use of ground guides, communication protocols with spotters, and minimizing blind spot risk during slow-speed operations.

Scene Safety, Staging & Shutdown Procedures

Teaches how to position vehicles safely at incident scenes or work sites. Operators learn proper use of cones, emergency lighting, vehicle idling rules, and shutdown steps to reduce risk to themselves, their crew, and the public.

Incident Documentation & Operator Accountability

Covers the legal and operational importance of accurate post-incident documentation. Operators learn how to log mechanical faults, document near-misses, and support departmental liability defense by demonstrating operator-level due diligence through training and reporting.
